“Our landfills are brimming with so much urban waste that according to a joint report by Assocham and accounting firm PwC, India is reportedly going to need a landfill that’s the size of New Delhi by 2050.”

The first and most crucial step to change this alarming forecast is to segregate waste so that it can be treated scientifically at the source. 

Many times I’ve seen workers sorting out all kinds of waste - rotting vegetables, plastic in all forms, tattered clothes, etc. It is really sickening that a fellow human has to dig through all our waste just because we refuse to segregate it. Moreover, most of the waste either goes to the landfills or gets burnt. 

I know we are all aware, but just like me we don’t really take out time to talk about this with others! I had moved last year to the society and out of habit had been segregating waste. However, the waste is not picked up in that manner. I have been asking our CBRE team to put different coloured dustbins and mail everyone about it. However, they would say that the residents won’t do that & we can’t do compost making currently, etc. I recently got to know that the vendor who collects the waste has also requested for the segregated waste! Nothing can happen if we all don’t support the cause. There are these following simple things we can do:

1. All we need to do is use two bins instead of one. All wet waste (food waste, and anything biodegradable) goes into one. All dry waste into another. CBRE places different coloured dustbins on every floor. 

2. There are different kinds of compost bins for different needs. I’ve shared the list with CBRE. We residents can contribute in buying the compost bin (which really won’t cost much per head).
