The Issue

Louisiana Leaders Should Negotiate From Strength Why are we acting like Louisiana has nothing to offer? There is no other Louisiana. No other state has our culture. No other state has our food, our music, our festivals, our hospitality, our wetlands, our seafood, our strategic location on the Mississippi River, our ports, our energy resources, or the people who make this state unlike anywhere else in the world. Companies come to Louisiana because they see opportunity. They gain access to one of the nation’s largest port systems, a skilled workforce, abundant natural resources, established industries, and a culture that attracts millions of visitors every year. Those are assets. Those assets have value. Too often, the conversation begins with, “How much money do we have to give a company to come here?” We should be asking a different question: What is Louisiana receiving in return? If taxpayers invest millions of dollars through grants, tax incentives, workforce training, or infrastructure improvements, every agreement should produce measurable benefits for Louisiana families. That means: * Living-wage jobs. * Long-term employment commitments. * Investment in local communities. * Workforce training for Louisiana residents. * Partnerships with Louisiana businesses. * Accountability if promised jobs or investments do not materialize. Louisiana should not negotiate from a position of desperation. We should negotiate from confidence. We are offering something no other state can replicate. When companies choose Louisiana, they are gaining access to a state with extraordinary economic, cultural, and geographic advantages. Those advantages should be recognized as part of every negotiation. The goal is not to discourage businesses from coming here. The goal is to build partnerships where both businesses and Louisiana families prosper together. Louisiana is worth investing in. And Louisiana’s people deserve to share in the value they help create.
