The Issue

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K) is an area with immense potential and vibrancy; however, its health sector faces numerous challenges that must be addressed urgently. Despite being a region under Pakistan's administrative control, AJ&K lacks access to a comprehensive, free National Health Service (NHS) that could ensure quality healthcare for all its residents. Establishing such a service is not only a matter of economic policy but a fundamental issue of social justice and human rights.

In AJ&K, healthcare facilities are either not sufficient or too expensive for the average citizen, contributing to a situation where many go without the necessary medical attention. The absence of free healthcare services exacerbates existing inequalities, disproportionately affecting the poorest and most marginalized communities. According to recent statistics, over 60% of the population in AJ&K lives below the poverty line, making out-of-pocket expenses for health care a formidable barrier to receiving essential services.

A free NHS in AJ&K could be modeled after the successful implementation of such services in other regions and countries, providing an organized, accountable system that ensures medical services are available and accessible to everyone, irrespective of their financial status. It could include the establishment of primary healthcare centers across the region, investing in medical infrastructure, and recruitment and training of healthcare professionals.

Moreover, a free NHS would play a significant role in improving health indicators in the region, like reducing child and maternal mortality rates and managing chronic diseases effectively. It would alleviate the financial burdens on families, enabling them to pursue better education, nutrition, and livelihoods, thereby enhancing the overall socio-economic development of AJ&K.

We urge the government, local authorities, and international organizations to take immediate action to establish a free National Health Service in AJ&K. Such a move would demonstrate a commitment to improving the quality of life and health standards for all its citizens. Join us in this critical cause—sign the petition to push for a healthier, fairer future for Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
