Stop unjust animal euthanasia.

The Issue

On Monday April 4th, 2016 our 11 year old German Shepherd, Maggie got out of the house through a screen door and ran into the yard to greet my mother. A neighbor happened to be walking past our driveway and Maggie ran up to her barking. The girl was frightened but did not appear to be harmed in any way as my mother brought Maggie back inside. My mother came back outside to check on the girl but she was gone. On Tuesday the 5th an animal control officer arrived at our house. She informed my mother that Maggie had reportedly bit the neighbor and that she would need to take her. We were visibly upset by this and the officer re-assured us, "Don't worry it's not like you won't get her back or anything.." So we muzzled our dog and harnessed her and handed her over to the officer. The cage Maggie was put into was made for a much smaller dog. She could not stand up and could barely move at all. The next day my mother received a phone call from a different officer stating that if she wants Maggie back that she has to go to court to appeal the "Dog at large" charge or she could surrender Maggie and she would be euthanized. He told my mother that she had "no case" and that there really wasn't any point in trying to get her back and that he needed to know in 24 hours so that he could "get his paperwork done" showing no compassion whatsoever for the situation. That evening we tried to get in contact with the girl who was reportedly bitten. We were able to speak to one of her family members. She told us that the girl was not bit and that it was a scratch. She also mentioned that the girl does not speak English very well so a miscommunication is very probable. My mother mentioned this to the officer handling her case and was told that since it was initially reported as a bite it would have to be handled as a bite regardless of whether or not it truly was. My mother feeling emotionally drained and defeated at this point asked if we would at least be given the opportunity to say goodbye to our beloved Maggie. He told her yes but she cannot leave the cage and you cannot go in.

If you agree that the Nebraska Humane Society has no right to remove a dog from the home with unjust cause and that instead of euthanasia as an ultimatum, rehabilitation through training be offered to families willing to put forth the time and money please sign.
