“Let her play #14”
The Issue
My name is Brandy Oxendine. My daughter Brianna Oxendine has been deemed ineligible to play high school softball due to class requirements not being met. My daughter Brianna Oxendine is a senior at Ashley high school. She is also a student athlete(softball) and has been all four years of her high school career here at Ashley. I was notified recently that she was ineligible to play this spring season because it is required that she take 3 classes per semester and she was only enrolled in 2 classes per semester. She needed only four credits to graduate. She was currently enrolled in the nursing program which would have given her an additional 2 credits(making a total of 6 credits) but due to covid those classes were cancelled, bringing her back down to only 4. She opted to split the four credits she was required into two semesters so that she would be able to play spring sports, not realizing she needed 3 classes per semester to even be eligible . She also worked along side her counselor, to scramble to even find elective classes to take because by the time she was notified the nursing program was cancelled last minute and all classes were full. It is apparent her counselor missed in her profile that she was a student athlete and needed to find extra classes. Not placing blame bc faculty have been so overwhelmed with everything switching around due to Covid. The fact is My daughter is and has been an AB student with good attendance. She has never violated any school rules and regulations and is an all around good student. I do not feel she should be punished by declining her eligibility to finish out her senior year playing softball because she didn’t add 2 extra classes that weren’t, in my eyes necessary for her future . The cancellation of the nursing program was beyond the control of the school and the student. Brianna deserves to play. I hope you will see this as special situation and that she would be deemed eligible to play this season.
Thank you,
Brandy Oxendine
