Currently, North Cobb High School’s mascot is the “warriors”. Not only does this appropriate natives and their culture, but it encourages their objectification and representation as characters, demeaning and appropriating an already marginalized group. It is not appropriate to have mascots parading around our sports fields dressed as natives, especially while failing to recognize the culture from which it is derived, we need to do better. We live on land stolen from natives, we should have the basic human decency to not treat them as a caricature, but rather human beings instead. It is an absolute embarrassment that a school that touts an “international magnet program” doesn’t have enough cultural sensitivity or foresight to recognize how using this mascot misrepresents natives and perpetrated harmful stereotypes. How can you claim to be so “worldly” but not even notice the transgressions at your own doorstep. We will refuse to demean natives in this way or condone the Eurocentric viewpoint from which North Cobb administration has made regarding our current mascot. Any other mascot, as long as it isn’t a race of humans, will gladly be accepted as a replacement.
