Pat Summitt, a legendary coach and trailblazer, passed away at the age of 64. The iconic women’s basketball coach won 8 championships, more than any other Division I coach in history. She changed the face of sports and broke down barriers. Pat Summitt deserves a fitting honor. Nothing is more fitting than naming the NCAA women’s basketball trophy in her honor.

When Pat Summitt first started, she did everything from drive the bus to games, to washing the team’s uniforms. The love of the game and excellence, not ego, always came first. She expected nothing less from those she coached. Pat Summitt built a reputation and the respect of those she worked with, and in turn she built the sport into what is today.

Without Pat Summitt, the doors for so many women athletes and coaches would have remained closed. It is for this reason, and to recognize what can be achieved through determination and hard work, the NCAA should name the women’s basketball championship trophy in honor of Pat Summitt. When the next NCAA finals are played, the winning team should be holding up high the Pat Summitt Championship trophy.
