Redesign Floor Pattern That is Dedicated to a Fascist

Redesign Floor Pattern That is Dedicated to a Fascist

The Issue

The floor pattern in the Allred Gallery, Kamphoefner Hall, is not only Le-Corbusier-inspired; it is accompanied by a quote, a drawing, and a signature of the fascist architect. He had used his drawing as a way to objectify and terrorize marginalized people, and his architectural language was developed as a way to spread fascist views with connections to Benito Mussolini and Marshall Pétain. All of this fills the Allred Gallery where students and faculty are supposed to congregate, and the floor pattern is an invitation for fascists to find solidarity within the College of Design the same way it has given Nazis validations in the past. There is no way to keep Le Corbusier’s work without perpetuating his ideals.

Our student-led team is not looking to call out the designer or any person involved in the making of the Allred Gallery. We are only interested in the future and what good can come out of this issue so that the College of Design at NC State University can become more conscious and inclusive.
