NC Senator Danny Britt should apologize for Offensive Remarks to a Constituent

The Issue

As concerned residents of North Carolina and advocates for respectful and inclusive dialog in public service, we are deeply troubled by the recent letter from Senator Danny Britt in which he suggested that a constituent move to China, Russia, or Venezuela for expressing her views.

Such rhetoric is dismissive, inflammatory, and unbecoming of a public servant tasked with representing all constituents, regardless of their political or personal beliefs. In a democracy, open discourse and the respectful exchange of ideas are fundamental principles that elected officials should uphold.

This incident is especially concerning given recent lessons from our state's political history. The defeat of gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson highlights the alienating effects of divisive and offensive statements. Robinson's history of inflammatory remarks about women, LGBTQ+ communities, and civil rights drew widespread criticism and played a significant role in eroding voter support, particularly among key demographics such as women and independent voters. His loss underscores the growing demand for respectful and inclusive leadership in North Carolina politics.

We, the undersigned, call on Senator Danny Britt to issue a sincere public apology for his remarks. As a leader in our state, he has a responsibility to foster unity and understanding, not division or hostility.

Senator Britt, your words matter. We urge you to take this opportunity to demonstrate accountability and reaffirm your commitment to serving all residents of North Carolina with respect and dignity.
