Please Improve NBC Gymnastics Coverage

The Issue

Based on a survey of gymnastics fans who watch NBC Gymnastics broadcasts, several patterns and comments have emerged. Signees of this petition share these concerns and hope for improvement in these areas:

Fans want to see more routines being shown as opposed to gymnasts not competing but instead standing, changing grips, cheering on said routines, sitting down, etc.

Fans want to see scores reported as an aside or on a small graphic or marquee during competition rather than cutting away from or avoiding a routine to show a gymnast's face.

Fans suggest the current scoring display practices used for ice skating may be useful as an example of what a similar system in gymnastics might look like.

Fans find following gymnasts around after they compete to be not interesting at best and creepy at worst.

Fans believe recent coverage decisions like the focus on Morgan Hurd during a painful moment at USA Nationals and holding the shot were not respectful and again took away from seeing actual competition.

Fans would prefer interviews only be shown if there are no routines underway as routines are the priority.

Fans find interviews that are tangential to elite gymnastics do not add to the broadcast and fans were highly critical of showing the same interview during each day of USA Nationals this past year.

Fans suggest more use of graphics during replays to display the height, speed, and other attributes of skills.

Fans suggest using a split screen to show multiple gymnasts at once, and if that is not possible during the TV broadcast, to make it available on streaming platforms.

Fans approve of the limited commentating done during floor routines.

Fans also request being able to know the context about how a gymnast's performances went into qualifying for World teams, Olympics etc, and an explanation of the system.

Fans request that camera views be wide enough to see the entire gymnast on the apparatus as well as to not bounce or move with the gymnast (as they swing on Bars for example). A stationary camera view is preferred.

Fans request close-ups be abandoned as they prevent us from seeing the skills being performed.

Fans request filming of Bars and Beam take place from the side (where the judges are) so fans can see elements clearly (just as the judges need to).

Fans request NBC avoid camera angles that are unflattering and inadvisable and suggest USAG Safesport photographer guidelines be used as help in avoiding such bad angles in the future.

Fans request that total score be broken down into D score, E score, and any neutral deductions.

Fans believe the current NBC color coded scoring metric can create confusion as to what routines are successful and which are not.

Fans asked for more technical discussion and context about the elements so viewers can learn more about them beyond just obvious information like that an element is difficult or has never been performed before.

Fans also request deductions are covered fully but not in an overly negative fashion.

Fans suggest Kathy Johnson Clarke and Bart Connor be looked to as the model for gymnastics commentary.

Fans request that though NBC is understandably focused on the USA audience, commentary should treat international competitors more fairly and equally. There is a concern international competitors are given harsher treatment than US athletes.

Fans believe there is too much repetition of information and story lines during the broadcast.

Fans hope more outreach will be done to LGTBQIA fans within gymnastics and representation will be increased.

Fans are concerned over how the parents of Simone Biles were described inaccurately as her grandparents and ask that this mistake not be repeated.

Fans believe too often coaches and parents become the focus of the conversation about an athlete when the athlete should be the main character in their own story.

Fans are concerned the commentary at times infantilizes young women.

Fans are concerned over conflicts of interests stemming from USA Gymnastics and NBC being partners at a time when USAG is under intense scrutiny. Fans wonder how former athletes who are sometimes current coaches or gym owners can be objective about USAG issues.

Fans believe much greater care needs to be taken in discussing USAG's culture and the Nassar scandal.

Thank you for your time.
