Run a telethon during the NBA playoffs to raise money for racial justice organizations

The Issue

The NBA has donated/contributed significant money to charities and causes of racial and economic justice over the years. Owners have committed $300M, players have contributed time and salary and fans have contributed directly/indirectly to causes the NBA supports.

Instead of stopping play, the NBA should run a telethon to raise money for projects and programs related to equality and justice. The power of celebrity is in its ability to raise money and money is absolutely whats needed right now. For bail funds, for the ACLU, for the NAACP, for the equal justice initiative, for get out the vote efforts etc. These programs will have a lasting impact that extends beyond the protest of any one player or team.

With anywhere between 35 and 60 games remaining in the playoffs each game can be used as a fundraising event, the NBA can contribute signed memorabilia to help encourage donations and a world wide audience of fans can be tapped. A target of $1m/game would likely raise ~$50m which can have a deep and lasting impact in producing real change.

Fundraisers/telethons are also great motivators for fans to play a greater part in social causes. Donating invests people into a process, and that helps ensure that change can last. Its one thing for celebrities, athletes, sports leagues etc. to do it, but real change requires buy in and participation from the population at large.
