Make August 24th (8/24) Mamba Day

The Issue

On January 26th 2020, Kobe Bryant, his daughter and 7 other loved ones perished in a fatal helicopter accident in Calabasas, CA.

Across the world, we witnessed in real time the mourning from all over..from Twitter to the Grammy's, to the impromptu gathering outside the Staples Center where Kobe spent his career, and the tributes made at the Pro Bowl and every media outlet that afternoon and evening. His impact was brought to light and the stories poured out from across the world on how Kobe influenced their lives.

Kobe embodied the game of basketball but many did not understand his global influence to the game and it's popularity. For years his jersey was the #1 selling in China- even over their own Yao Ming. He influenced the NBA to embrace the European game, often touting the skill sets of players overseas while others doubted they would transition. Since, the NBA has seen an explosion of international talent and a following of basketball once thought impossible. The game would not be what it is today without his influence.

Most importantly Kobe showed his passion and love for the game. He was a fierce competitor, but loved and gave back just as fiercely.

He passed away en route to continuing his second phase of his career- empowering youth to embrace the "Mamba" mentality on and off the court, and share his passion and love for the game with young ones.

He was the embodiment of loving your craft, and sharing that compassion and wisdom selflessly with others.

For these reasons- I am proposing the NBA work in conjunction with state and federal legislators to propose a national Kobe Day, or "Mamba Day" on 8/24 to commemorate the two jersey numbers he wore during his career with the LA Lakers. May it be a celebration of love and passion for a man whose influence spans across the globe.
