NBA add points per court segment distance

The Issue

As a longtime fan of the NBA, I've witnessed the evolution of the game, experiencing both the highs and the lows.

Basketball has always been about more than just points; it's about the spectacle, the artistry, the moments that bring fans to their feet in excitement. Enhancing this aspect could reignite that fire and passion in both players and fans alike. With adding a 3-point difficulty bonus for extraordinary efforts—such as double-pumps or 360-degree spins or jumping from the free throw line—we can highlight and incentivize the incredible skills and creativity that professional players have developed.

The Statistics show that viewership spikes in highlight-reel-worthy moments and focusing on enhancing these moments could be a game-changer for attracting more fans and keeping them engaged, so I suggest the following:

1 point should be added to shots the further away that they are from the basket. Each segment of the court should be an additional point added to the shot:

Shooting from logo should be 4 points.

Shooting from half-court should be 5 points.

Shooting from the 3-point line on the other half of the court should be 6 points.

Shooting from the free throw line at the other half should be 7 points.

Shooting from the circle of the opposite half court paint should be 8 points.

Shooting from the baseline and corners on the other side of the court should be 10 points.

This proposal is not just about changing the point values; it's about celebrating what makes basketball exhilarating. It's about offering fans and players alike more moments to cheer. Encouraging athletic feats and rewarding difficulty not only enriches the game but also honors the spirit of the sport.

Join us in petitioning the NBA to adapt its scoring system to bring back the thunderous excitement of difficult dunks and even more points for shots made at longer ranges. Let’s reward those truly jaw-dropping moves like never before. Together, we can influence the NBA to embrace this change and elevate the game we all love. Sign the petition to show your support for bringing back thrilling, high-flying and long-range action to basketball's greatest stage.

Edit: For those concerned with abuse of the dunk aspect in the new point system, here are a few stipulations:

1) If a player is more than three feet ahead of any players or already on a different section of the court before the fast break; the bonus points would not apply, and it would simply be a two-point dunk.

2) To discourage unnecessarily dangerous fouls, another point would be added to the clear path foul rule; making it 3 points awarded to anyone fouled from behind on the fast break, as well as awarded possession of the ball afterward.

3) Difficulty added dunks would NOT include throwing the ball off of the backboard as a pass to yourself, rather the player must retain control of the ball during the added maneuvers.
