The Issue

Navajo Express Inc, formally known as The Navajo Freight Line, is a trucking company operating since 1940 by Mitch Howe. This company that once sought to support the Navajo Nation started using our Tribal name "Navajo". However, as a growing company, they didn't feel the need to preserve the dignity of our indigenous women and decided to use an exploiting advertising tactic. They created a logo depicting pin up half-naked Caucasian women in native american attire; referring to them as 'Squeezable Squaws" - contributing to the indignant stereotype of Native women. Don Digby, Sr followed by his son Don Digby, JR inherited this company, and decided to continue to degrade our people. Starting with the phrase "The blue eyed Indian girl" followed with an image of a blue-eyed Caucasian girl wearing native american attire! This company slapped the logo of this girl on its freight trucks with the word "Navajo" in huge bold red letters. What do I see here? Cultural appropriation and a complete lack of respect for us Dine' people with possible knowledge of what our nation has been through (and is still struggling with to this day). Navajo express.inc is doing nothing to support our people during the Covid -19 pandemic. The Navajo nation is suffering from this virus that is killing off our honored elders who have been preserving our tradition since before WW2! They also fail to offer any help in the issue that is the missing and murdered Indigenous women, a nationally over looked issue that has been dramatically increasing each year! Yet they still feel it is acceptable to carry our Government name with no regards to our culture or the strong people who are proud to still be here after the most horrific attempt of genocide in the 1800's. Here are the demands:

Change your company's name and remove the logo of the "blue eyed Indian girl"

Contribute by donating to The Navajo Nation's Covid-19 relief fund

Contribute to The missing and murdered indigenous women by donating to Coalition to Stop Violence against Native Women

I am here to speak for those who can not speak for us. I am here for Indigenous liberation not just for my tribe but for all tribes across The United States. I'm here to prioritize and preserve our nation, fight racial injustice, protect and empower our Native American women, children and men, and to support our local indigenous businesses to secure a better future for our youth.
