I'm writing this petition because I've witnessed firsthand how social media platforms are being used to disseminate disinformation and manipulate the public. People close to me, even my own friends, sincerely believe in false narratives like the UK being under a Muslim invasion. These baseless fears are fabricating hate and division within our communities. This situation is not only heartbreaking but perilous.

However, the reality is that these platforms are now being manipulated by profit-driven tech giants. According to a study conducted by the University of Cambridge, social media is a significant factor in the spread of disinformation, with falsehoods often spreading faster than the truth. Another report by the Royal Society found that exposure to false information can increase the likelihood of individuals endorsing those false statements, leading to a skewed understanding of reality.

We advocate for the nationalisation of social media platforms as a preventive measure against data exploitation and the perpetration of societal harm. By transferring ownership to the public, the UK government can help ensure that these platforms are regulated responsibly and that users' data is protected with the utmost care. Nationalisation could provide transparency and accountability, steering these platforms away from prioritising profit over public safety.

Nationalisation would not only prevent data breaches and the dissemination of disinformation but could also foster a healthier, more inclusive online community. Public ownership could pave the way for fair regulations that promote diverse and accurate content, ensuring that social media serves its original purpose as a tool for connection and knowledge sharing rather than division and discord.
