Investigate Discrepancy in JEE Mains September 2020 scores across batches

Investigate the discrepancies in JEE Main September 2020 NTA Scores

The JEE Mains exam is a major event in the lives of lakhs of hardworking students across the country and determines their careers. It is important that the conduct and evaluation procedures of this exam be highly transparent and fair. Any arbitrariness, secretiveness or evaluation procedures that introduce a large element of luck will be extremely demoralizing to lakhs of students and their parents, and have grave repercussions for the future of the Nation.

In this context, it is very sad and alarming to note that that there is a major discrepancy in the normalization procedure of JEE Mains exam. In the recently conducted exam in September, major disparity has been seen in the marks obtained and the percentile scores awarded across shifts, despite the difficulty level of papers being similar across the shifts. Students are very distraught and have lost faith on hard work. Many deserving students have not been able to clear the cut-off to qualify for JEE Advanced exams. There are a number of students complaining on twitter and social media. For example, a person who obtained 147 marks in September 3 second shift got percentile score of 93.9 whereas a student obtaining 102 marks in September 6 second shift has got 97.2 percentile. In another case known personally to me, a student scored 116 marks and her percentile score was calculated to be 88.3, whereas the same marks in a different batch would have fetched a percentile score of more than 97. It appears the variation in ranks for the same score across two different batches can run into an order of tens of thousands and at times even close to a lakh.

There is no information from NTA on the distribution of raw scores vs percentile in each batch that was used to determine the percentile scores. They should immediately release data on the distributions so that doubts in student’s minds can be settled or if there is a problem, corrective action can be taken.

We would like to represent to NTA and the Honorable HRD Minister to look into this matter urgently, release all data about the percentile computation for each batch, and take corrective action in case of batches where there are discrepancies, and adopt procedures to avoid the repeat of this distressing problem in the future.

I request you all to sign this petition and circulate in your network so that more people can come forward. We have only a few days before JEE Advanced exam and admissions to colleges start, so please treat this urgently.
