George W. Jenkins Jr.- the founder of Publix Super Markets- commissioned these beautiful works of art on the storefront of his (now) former grocery store in the early 1960's. Millions of people over the decades have stood awestruck in front of these mosaics. Several generations of shoppers have passed by them, admiring the vibrant colors and the painstaking detail of the story it told.
These treasures have now been covered over with layers of paint by the owners, National Properties Trust Inc..Many Lakeland residents, and people from other states have voiced their objections to this in print and social media sites with no response from them.
Perhaps these owners would consent to remove the paint, contact Publix Super Markets and have them assist, or remove them for you. Or, involve the City of Lakeland Community Development/Historic Preservation Department to help keep these treasures aesthetically viable and visible.
