Give third-party presidential candidates a voice in 2016

The Issue

Sign the petition to urge the national media to give third-party presidential candidates an equal voice this election year by covering their campaigns and including third-party nominees in the debates for the general election.

A January 2016 Gallup poll found that 42% of Americans identified as political independents. Another Gallup poll from September 2015 indicated that 60% of Americans "say a third major political party is needed because the Republican and Democratic parties 'do such a poor job' of representing the American people." Moreover, approximately 2 million Americans officially claim membership in the nation's largest third parties—the Libertarian Party, the Green Party, and the Constitution Party.

Despite the widespread call to end the two-party system, the current national debate rules exclude candidates who fail to reach 15% support in national opinion polls, even if they are on the ballot in enough states to have a mathematical chance of winning the election. This makes it virtually impossible for third-party candidates to participate in debates—especially because they are rarely included in national polls! In turn, third-party candidates cannot advance their message, cannot achieve 15% in the polls, and the vicious cycle continues.

It's time to break the vicious cycle that marginalizes third-party candidates due to lack of media attention. Please sign the petition and urge the national media to fairly represent the majority of Americans and give third-party presidential candidates a voice in 2016.
