Vasili Arkhipov was a soviet sub commander that prevented WW3 during the Cuban Missile Crisis; during the embargo around Cuba a soviet submarine was able to pass through and was then detected by a US Navy fleet and the navy fleet started to drop fake naval mines but the Sub Commander did not know this and had previously lost contact with Moscow and they thought WW3 had already started so they were going to launch a nuclear torpedo which would have taken out the whole navy fleet and started a thermonuclear war but to launch the nuke they had to have a unanimous vote between the 3 commanding officers 2 agreed while he didn't if he had agreed WW3 would have started and everyone you know would be dead.
