The NHL should be fairly aligned for Canadian Teams!

The Issue

This season (2015) there will be no Canadian teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

That's wrong and the NHL should make a change that is not biased against Canadian teams. (See explaination below)

The Stanley Cup was donated by the Governor General of Canada Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892, and is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. Inscribed the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, the trophy was first awarded to Canada's amateur ice hockey clubs who won the trophy as the result of challenge games and league play.

Until 1927, when it became the property of the National Hockey League, the Stanley Cup was only won by Canadian Teams. For a long time, in the NHL, there was a proportionate number Stanley Cup wins by Canadian Teams. Since 1993, when the Montreal Canadians hoisted the Cup...There have been no Canadian winners.

This petition does not attempt to compare talents of teams and players. It does, however assume that players would much rather be on a winning team. If you reduce the chances of a team winning the Stanley Cup...it reduces the team's opportunity to retain top performing players.

We the undersigned believe the the NHL discriminates against Canadian teams by:

  1. Having a disproportionate number of 23 American teams that play against the 7 Canadian teams. That's a 7 in 23 (30.43%.) chance that a Canadian team will make the playoffs!
  2. The league is divided between East and West, with Canadian teams distributed through 3 of the 4 divisions. we've used basic inferential statistics, to show the odds of Canadian teams (which we need more of i.e. Quebec) making the playoffs
  3. Two of the divisions each have three Canadian teams in them and 4 American teams. That means there is a 3 in 7 chance that a Canadian team in those divisions will make the playoffs. (Favour U.S.)
  4. One of the divisions has 3 Canadian teams and 5 American teams. Than means there is a 3 in 8 chances that a Canadian team in those divisions will make the playoffs. (Favour U.S.)
  5. The only exception is the Winnipeg Jets, the lone Canadian team in the Central Division. Winnipeg has a 1 in 7 chances of making the playoffs. (Favour U.S.)
  6. The Metropolitan Division, has no Canadian teams in it, that alone statistically reduces the chances that a Canadian will make the playoffs.

Based on the above, we the undersigned would like the NHL to realign the teams in the NHL, from north to south (i.e. Northern, Central and Southern Divisions). This distribution would allow Canadian teams to better defend our Stanley Cup.
