UK NHS to Recognise Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity as a medical condition

The Issue

People with Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) are not recognised as having a health issue that can effect their living, work and every day life. In fact, they can be subjected to Electromagnetic Field, Electric Field and Radio Frequencies anywhere, inside and outside of buildings.

The UK does not have specific laws or guidelines for safe levels of Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMg, EF and RF) for people with EHS in homes. General Guidelines are extremely high - 3 times higher than most countries. It also does not have limits on safe exposure times. The NHS does not recognise people who have EHS and does not have specialists in this area available. Housing providers do not recognise EHS as an issue that impacts on home life, or as an issue that necessitates action to deal with electrical issues that cause EMF, or others causes. This is perhaps more important than EMF issues elsewhere, since people sleep, spend more time at home, and cannot easily move.

I have had EMF issues in my Housing Association flat for 3 years, causing symptoms including insomnia, heart palpitations, Tinnitus, body/head vibrations and numbness to the head. I have also had Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism and Anaemia. Because of these I cannot work or live a normal life. An EMF Survey identifies it as coming from faulty wiring which can not be picked up through normal EICR tests (specialised tests on the wires themselves need to be done), yet my Housing Association, Peabody, and Southwark Council refuse to investigate or to move me, so I am left in this intolerable situation. I have to leave my flat when EMF levels are high frequently, and had 2 incidents where levels were so high my entire body shook visibly, which is obviously dangerous. I live with the fear of this happening again, which could prove fatal, as it affects the heart.

The NHS and UK Government needs to recognise EHS as a bona fide health issue which would mean housing organisations and Councils would then need to deal with EMF issues in housing. It needs to be recognised that EMF is a health and safety issue and a cause of EHS that needs to be acted upon.

It is clear that due to the growing use of electronic products and WiFi, that EHS is a growing issue for home and work areas. Many people may actually be affected without knowing why, as I was for a long time. Many other countries take this issue seriously and take steps to protect people in housing and other areas. The UK needs to also do this in order to protect everyone's health and well being - not only for people with EHS now, but to prevent people developing this in the future.

Recognising EHS as a proper health issue in the NHS is the first important step.

Many thanks for your support.
