#StopLamuCoal: Stop plans for the Lamu Coal Power Plant

The Issue

Lamu is a pristine ecosystem with two National Reserves, a Biosphere Reserve, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Coal fired plants emit toxins that are unhealthy for communities and the environment and will bring irreparable damage to Lamu.

The Kenyan Ministry of Energy is planning a 1,050 megawatts Coal Power Plant project in Lamu undertaken by Amu Power. The coal will be transported from South Africa and Mozambique.

Amu Power will develop, own and operate the station for 25 years and has appointed The Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) as the EPC contractor, a subsidiary to the Chinese Government owned Sinohydro.

We are calling upon the National Environmental Management Authority to deny a license to Amu Power, and other leaders to opposed all plans for the Lamu Coal Plant Project and encourage the utilization of greener or renewable energy sources.

The Environment and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Study for the Proposed 1,050MW Coal Fired Power Plant Project, Kenya (NEMA/EIA/5/2/1278) is available at https://www.amupower.co.ke/esia.html
