The Issue

9 TO 5. 9/25. NATIONAL DOLLY PARTON DAY.

When I heard that Dolly Parton had passed away, I started thinking about the incredible impact she had on generations of people—not only through her music, but through literacy, charity, kindness, and service.

Then it hit me:

September 25 is 9/25.

9 to 5.

What better date could there be to celebrate Dolly Parton's life and continue the work she believed in?

We are asking the United States Congress to recognize September 25 of each year as National Dolly Parton Day: a National Day of Literacy, Kindness, Service, and Music.

Dolly's legacy reaches far beyond entertainment. Through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, more than 300 million books have been gifted to children, helping families develop a love of reading that can last a lifetime.

On September 25, Americans could honor that legacy by reading to a child, donating a book, helping a neighbor, volunteering, supporting working people, making music, or simply doing something kind for someone else.

This wouldn't just be a day to remember Dolly.

It would be a day to continue what she started.

Our first goal is national recognition here in the United States. But Dolly's impact reached around the world, and we hope that one day 9/25 can become a day celebrated by communities around the globe.

Dolly Parton gave us a lifetime of music, laughter, generosity, books, and kindness.

Now America has an opportunity to give her one day in return.

9 TO 5.
