Protection and conservation of Fort San Pedro, Culion, Palawan

The Issue

Culion was the first Spanish pueblo in Calamian since 1622.  Mission house was founded in San Pedro.  In 1623, Recollects built fort against Muslim pirates.  In 1636, Muslims looted San Pedro; the pueblo was burned.  Fr. de San Agustin was taken with some locals.  Muslims met the forces of Capt. Nicolas Gonzales; battle ensued.  Datu Tagal was killed; his 300 men were captured; locals were freed.  Fr. de San Agustin was killed.   Fr. Sendeño completed the log fort; built stone fort inside it.  Installed other defense facilities.  The defense system played down the Muslim raids in Culion.  In 1663, the stone fort was completed after 26 years; made of coral stones; area of 121. m2.; with 4.m. wall.  Moat built along the periphery served as barrier to would be intruders.

Since then, fort existed. A cultural property that must be protected, enriched and conserved by the present generation.  It remained an ‘uncategorized property of the State’

We, residents   seek your utmost action for the protection, preservation and conservation of the fort.  Private persons might encroach, the LGU-Culion is not keen on protecting it, thus, we take the duty of doing it.  Be this as our VERIFIED PETITION.
