While speaking during the funeral services of Stephon Clark, the young man shot by police "20 times" in his own backyard for holding a cell phone, AL SHARPTON said the issue of police brutality and murder is a "national" issue, one which will be brought before the Trump administration and indeed the world"...and went on to tell of all the murders committed by police, for which justice had not been given.
I am writing you today to say "our enough" was not enough to bring the demand in progress to the forefront of the nation. We have had more than sufficient time in which to move it forward but the efforts that were made we're made by "the few", while the majority sat back and waited for the results of the demand.
Collectively, we have everything we need for this demand to be heard "world wide". We had support from Mexico, those in Africa, Venezuela and the United Kingdom - the latter of which personally "publicized our efforts" within media in their own country and supported our efforts with donations towards it. And then went even further, by creating a quilt on which they "hand stitched" the name of every person who donated on the quilt entitled: NATIONAL ACTION AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY.
Yet some how, the thousands who had already "signed" the petition, we're not motivated to go out and collect signatures, enabling us to move forward. And repeated requests to do so were of no effect. I've gone out on the front-lines with the demand in progress, appeared on TV, radio and numerous panels and forums conveying the need for "nation wide" action. And the interest and support was in "words only", it niether increased the signatures needed nor provoked donations towards this effort.
As a result, we've been in "a stand still" only moving forward after the murder of another innocent victim because it's been publicized in the media. The objective of this demand was not simply to "collect signatures", but to develop a nation wide "movement" which could not be ignored. A movement such as this requires financial backing and the hope that it would be financed "for and by the people" has yet to materialize, despite a demonstration of the work which was being done. Work, that provided an opportunity to address the issue at congressional hearings, speak with top officials in Washington at The Department of Justice. Work that enabled me to meet with staff from the Obama administration, and attend subcommittee meetings at the United Nations - who in fact publicized a statement concerning it directed at this government following that meeting. The point I'm making, is that while "doors were opened up" for me to address the issue, the people though they had been asked to, neglected to push for signatures. We have been given every opportunity that's available to get the demand heard across the nation.
Despite all of it, we have not moved forward. And the only reason that I see, is the lack of commitment to do so, from the majority who have signed the demand declaring "nation wide action" is needed. To have obtained nearly 50,000 signatures, and just over $5,000 in donations "speaks volumes" of what is truly thought and felt regarding the demand. If each had given $1 it would have pushed us well ahead of where we are now, enabling us to be more in the forefront with our demand. If each person who "signed it" would commit to getting just "one signature" daily - we could multiply the signatures by thousands "daily". But where was the response when asked to do so?
Had I not done the work in advance while asking you "donate" I could understand the hesitancy in donations. But the work was already being done and shown to you as it continued. This was in addition to the commentaries and videos I made, keeping you "updated" on the latest cases and where we stand with our petition. I see nothing more that I could of done to further this demand and solicit "support and interest". And all I wanted to do, by way of giving "support to others" who are fighting alone, the resources provided didn't allow it. I had to tell people "No, I can't come to your city and stand with you". They saw a stand being taken for "others" and wanted the same and couldn't understand why support wasn't being given. There are major events that one seeking nation wide action should attend. Who pays for it? Who pays for the banners, the posters, the literature, the travel expense, the hotel stay, the whole 9 yards? Those who have supported the demand moving forward and have donated for that purpose!
Unfortunately, we don't have enough of those supporters and remain in a near "stuck" position while the murders increase, becoming more and blatant. The good news is AL Sharpton has announced "nation wide action" is needed against police brutality and murder. He says the fight will be brought before the Trump administration and indeed the world because the issue is " nation wide" not "local" as Trump suggests. Maybe an "Al Sharpton" is the thing people were waiting for, to ignite them into action. Having "done all there is to do" ...they couldn't possibly be waiting on "me".
