Let me be honest and tell you that our goal which is set at 50,000 is going to be "raised" once we've reached it. The original goal had been reduced to 50,000 signatures because I was given an opportunity to meet with top officials at the Department of Justice, in Washington, D.C. and wanted to submit the petition to them while attention within the media was focused on that meeting. At the time we had just 16,000 signatures and I asked all the supporters and those who had "signed it" to get at least 50,000 signatures - before I left for Washington. I didn't want to go simply as "a mother" declaring nation wide action is needed, I wanted to bring proof that a nation wide demand was in fact underway. With 3 weeks in which to do this, I urged all supporters to "please get those signatures". But I arrived in Washington with just a little over 18,000 signatures - far less than what was hoped for and the goal which was reduced to 50,000 signatures has remained.
We could certainly send the demand to Washington upon reaching 50,000 signatures. But sending the petition alone was never the objective. The objective is a "nation wide movement" that cannot be ignored! Those are the reasons we've attempted to "fundraise" to insure the demand is heard far and wide by use of literature, travel, and forums - all soliciting "support" and "increasing" our signatures and galvanizing a nation wide demand which is heard loud and clear. Our funds which never reached the goal have been exhausted, and we were forced to work with what we had because the need is great. What remains cannot galvanize "a nation wide movement" or provide the tools necessary in order to build and maintain one.
So I pose the following question to those who have supported this demand: where do we go upon reaching 50,000 signatures? Shall we continue obtaining signatures or submit our petition having 50,000 signatures and wait for the response? I can tell you of a certainty without "a movement and a fight" backing up the demand, nothing even resembling justice shall even be considered! The current administration within the Department of Justice has made it crystal clear, that in no form or fashion, do they intend to hold "police accountable" and have in fact dismissed cases before them, which were seeking their investigation and prosecution. One after the other were dismissed, even those committed on video for all to see.
We do not have the kind of resources needed to wage the kind of fight that is needed. Yet the demand remains and cannot "go away" due to insufficient funds. The murders will not cease and NIETHER should we! But if we are not going to donate, then we have to "take up the cost" ourselves and create flyers and literature regarding the demand and host panels and forums concerning it. There are those supporting this demand, who work in schools, within media, and who are active in their perspective communities, who are able to speak and address the need for nation wide action and obtain support and signatures for the demand. If you can't trust me with your finances, maybe you can trust yourselves. Perhaps then the mobilization needed can finally get off the ground, whether or not a tragedy is being highlighted in the media. I encourage all of you to do as I have done, and use the tools already in your possession. You'd be surprise what a little effort might do mixed with faith and conviction you are fighting "the good fight".
