Natalie’s Right - calling for urgent safeguarding of elderly patients in NHS care.
The Issue
My beloved grandmother Natalie passed away in June 2026 following a painful and largely avoidable year of poor health. We watched helplessly as her multiple conditions, which should have been manageable, spiraled due to inconsistent and disjointed care. Her story is not unique, and many other elderly patients are suffering needlessly within the NHS due to similar systemic failures.
Natalie’s Right is calling for patients, families and staff to be able to request an urgent multidisciplinary review of care in situations whereby the patient is suffering from multiple conditions managed by multiple teams/ disciplines.
It is crucial that we address the care provided to elderly patients with multiple conditions. There is an urgent need for independent care reviews in circumstances whereby a patient is suffering from multiple conditions that are managed by separate teams. In many cases, elderly patients like my grandmother receive fragmented care, with specialists focusing narrowly on individual conditions without considering or being aware of the full scope of their health needs. This lack of a cohesive care strategy can lead to complications, prolonged suffering, and avoidable death.
A comprehensive independent review of elderly patient care in the NHS could identify current gaps in the system, promote a holistic approach, and drive the implementation of coordinated care plans for those with multiple conditions via Natalie’s Right. Such an initiative should include listening to the experiences of current and former patients and their families, examining outcomes data for elderly patient care, and setting new standards that require collaboration and cohesion among healthcare providers.
According to the British Geriatrics Society, older patients make up an increasing proportion of those being treated by the NHS. Yet, many of these patients experience care that lacks coordination between various specialists and disciplines. This is further supported by a report from Age UK, which highlights the critical need for improved integration of care for elderly people with complex health profiles.
Let's ensure that our loved ones receive the care they deserve, with compassion and thoroughness. By demanding an independent review and the implementation of Natalie’s right, we take concrete steps toward better, more cohesive care for all elderly patients. Please help us champion this cause by signing the petition today. Together, we can advocate for change that will honour the lives of elderly patients and their families.
