The official announcement that West Shore Road will be closed for nine months, and that residents of Bayville, Centre Island, Mill Neck and Oyster Bay are “misinformed” and should be grateful that the previously scheduled 18 month reconstruction (which allowed for the road to remain open and passable), would now be combined with emergency repairs while the road is closed, is both insulting and unacceptable.
The closure of West Shore Road presents a significant hardship and a mortal threat to both lives and businesses in the affected villages.
Numerous experts have determined that it is possible to reopen the road in a much shorter period of time. Similar damage, and worse, has been repaired in many other instances significantly faster. The fact that the greatly damaged Ocean Parkway will reopen within 180 days clearly demonstrates that such repairs are possible.
All elected and appointed officials need to understand that your position requires you to do whatever is necessary and possible to fulfill the needs of your constituents. We, your constituents, DO have the need and the will to have this road open as soon as possible, and we will not accept ANY excuses. You will be called to account for any failure to meet the needs of the communities you represent.
We, the undersigned, therefore DEMAND that this untenable schedule be abandoned, that the contractor be replaced and/or supplemented with additional contractors if necessary, and that West Shore Road be repaired immediately and reopened as soon as possible.
Note: please do not sign this petition more than once.
