The Issue
We are calling on NASA to change the name of the Stennis Space Center to honor someone who helped push the boundaries of humankind, not regress them.
John C. Stennis was a prolific white supremacist.
- He opposed civil rights legislation in the 50's, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 & 1968, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, anti-lynching legislation, and the Fair Employment Practices Committee.
- He signed the Southern Manifesto in support of school segregation.
- He used torture to get confessions out of three black men to try and get them the death penalty.
- He supported white supremacist senator James Eastland, who believed segregation was a law of nature by God.
- He has been named the "heart, soul, and brains of the white supremacist caucus in the 1948 Congress."
