Dear friend,
I'm grateful to each of the 2.2 lakh people who signed and supported this petition asking the Government of India to make attacks on Doctors and healthcare workers a non bailable offence. Thanks to the Indian Medical Association, Resident doctors Association, pressure from society and the medical fraternity , the central government has today promulgated an ordinance to the Epidemic Act making attacking a Doctor or health worker a cognizable and non-bailable offense. There will be NO BAIL, and imprisonment ranging from 6months- 7 years, as well as fine of 50,000- 2 lakh Rupees.
This is a very welcome step and we are grateful to the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Health Minister for bringing about this much needed ordinance. I trust that a follow up to this ordinance will be a Central Protection Act for Doctors and Health workers which will continue to safeguard our interests even after the Covid 19 pandemic is over.
The real challenge for society is to remove the stigma being associated with this disease, and treat patients and high risk individuals with empathy and kindness. We as a nation are in this pandemic together. There should be no more incidents of violence against Doctors, health workers and covid warriors. All of us need to sensitise people around us and ensure there is no repeat of violent acts which make all Indians hide our heads in shame.
Tough times seldom last, tough people do. Stay safe, stay sane and spread smiles , not fear. Lastly, pat yourself for a job well done... Together, we did it!!
Warm regards
Dr.Sarika Verma
