Make 40 hours week policy compulsory for all Indian companies

Make 40 hours week policy compulsory for all Indian companies

The Issue

In a country where the incidence of heart disease and diabetes is on the rise, and deadly pollution levels endanger the lives of millions, there’s one quiet health concern that doesn’t get much public attention: fatigue.

But over one in five Indians aged between 18 and 64 (22%) are concerned about being tired more than anything else, including blood pressure and diabetes, according to one recently released research report. And this figure increases among women: 25% of Indian women interviewed by the market intelligence company said tiredness was their top health concern.

Work-life balance is a bit of a national joke, with employees working around 2,195 hours on average every year, far more than those in most other countries. In this survey of 19,000 millennials in 25 countries, Indians came out on top, clocking a massive 52 hours per week on average, outpacing their counterparts in the US, UK, and even China by quite a big margin. And last year, India was the world’s fourth-most vacation-deprived nation.

Most Indian companies take advantage of employees by expecting them to work almost 9/10 hours a day and 5/6 days a week for salary far below average. Stress and loneliness are new problems that most Indians are facing after working too much.

On other side, unemployment in India has become a huge problem. Inequality is also worse. Top 1% bag 73% of the country's wealth. Most company owners, shopkeepers and IT firms give 1/100 of what they earn through the employee.

Also the data shows that countries like Norway, Switzerland, Sweeden and Danmark have higher productivity workforce than others. Most of these countries have strict labour laws and strict workforce policies across the nation.

Given this data, there is a need for nationwide policies to address these problems. If we can enforce the maximum working days and maximum working hours policy across the country, it will help dramatically generating jobs, balancing inequality and reducing stressful work environments. If we want to see India developed with a balanced growth, the government of India must act now. Thanks.
