Elphinstone station is usually crowded during peak hours as it caters to office-goers in the Lower Parel area. The station, on the Western Line of the Mumbai suburban rail network, also connects to Parel station on the Central line.
11.30 am: Reports suggest that heavy rains triggered the stampede at Elphinstone railway station.
12.09 pm: In a video shared on social media, people can be seen caught in the stampede. Initial photos from the scene show people lying on the ground after they jumped from the bridge to save themselves.
12.20 pm: Death toll in the Elphinstone Road station stampede goes up to 22. Among the dead, four were women and 18 men.
02:46 pm: I got a call from a friend (Poonam) saying that both the aunties were trapped in the tragedy and couldn't make it.
My hands shivered and was not able to accept that Sumalatha and Sujata Aunty were no more, i saw the restroom, washed my face and tried to understand the exact situation through some on call. I tried to call my sister but disconnected the call half way through, i did not have the courage to face her also that she won't be able to pick the call at such times.
She is 19-20 with she alone for her parents, dad a hotelier and mom a house wife. Can someone just imagine how is she going to be and face for the rest of the life? Who would have imagined and expected that something like would happen as she went to buy some flowers from 'Dadar Fool Market'.
However coming to the point how do we see this incident? 5 lakhs compensated from Indian Railway and State Government each.. New bridge connecting Elphinstone-Parel railway station was sanctioned in 2016 and the tender work is underway. We suggest the Modi government that we first start investing on the infrastructural aspects and tie-up Japan and Shinzo Abe for this. We having a 2,11,711 KM all over India and still we are lacking on the basic amenities like FOB, Washrooms, Coaches etc.
We cannot get her back for sure, but our biggest tribute to the one lost their life's would be no such incident take place at any time.
We'll not just sit back and see our loved ones go through this type of danger, it's high time that the government takes a call or we will..
