We want ACTION, We want CHANGE

We want ACTION, We want CHANGE

The Issue

On January 22, 2015 my younger brother passed away at the Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, Laos. He called our parents from the Wattay International Airport and left a voice message asking them to call the embassy. He left two other voice messages for family and friends, stating the situation was bad and there were people trying to kill him.

Initially, we were informed by foreign affairs that he tried to kill himself by stabbing himself 3 times but from articles we've found and from the autopsy report, these claims of suicide are not consistent. The report reveals that he sustained a stab wound to his right chest, right lung laceration, multiple stab wounds on his neck, neck muscle hemmorrage, external jugular vein laceration, a stab wound on the right forearm, multiple cuts on his left hand and forearm, and multiple contusion wounds on both hands and his right knee.

We have reached out to an MP in Ontario, foreign affairs, and the Canadian Embassy in Thailand. All have been dead ends with the same message stating that any investigation into Nara's death is being handled by the Laotian police and our Canadian government can only ask politely that they share information with us. The last conversation with the Consular representative in Ottawa, I was informed that the Laos police have refused to release any information regarding Nara's case.

A developed country, a country that is to be proud to uphold it's human rights for its citizens, has now demonstrated that those rights are no longer of importance when a death occurs off our soil. What type of protection is this? What are we demonstrating as a country? This is an attack against our Canadian Citizens...when do we fight for our citizens?

Please, I ask that we fight for not only my brother, but for everyone that has lost a loved one during their travels. This is NOT acceptable for any family to go through. 'Light for Nara' is our fight to bring justice, to force pressure on the importance of PROTECTION for our Canadian Citizens. Bring light to this injustice! We want the TRUTH. We want EVIDENCE. We want ACTION.
