Over the last two decades America has seen an increasing militarization of its police forces, creating an adversarial relationship between its citizens and those who are paid to keep the peace. Military gear has seen its way into the most rural of police departments: Full body armor, gas masks, assault rifles...  As criminologists John Paul and Michael Birzer have stated, "When police organizations look and act like soldiers, a military mindset is created that declares war on the American public."

We need to de-escalate the militarization of our police force, and the simplest way to achieve this is to adopt those uniforms and behavior of a more humane period of time. This is why we demand a nationwide amendment to require our peacekeepers to follow in the footsteps of those who maintain peace in the holiest place of all: the Vatican. 

Sign this petition to begin a nationwide amendment to require all local police officers adopt some form of the Pontifical Swiss Guard uniform. The palette of stripes and ruffles can be adopted to local color schemes, but only weaponry created before the 1900s may be worn for standard policing, such as a halberd or polearm. Exceptions will be allowed in the case of body cameras and cellular telephones.
