Namma ORR -A Sure way to END TRAFFIC CONGESTION and also STOP AIR POLLUTION.

Namma ORR.

Lakhs of people work here. It is one of Bengaluru’s toughest traffic stretches. The traffic congestion on our ORR was a subject of a short Kannada movie! – ‘Silk Board A Traffic Love Story’.

Our ORR is also having worst air quality, caused by large number of auto-mobiles. The air pollution is not visible, but we are paying a huge environment cost.

The traffic congestion at ORR is also resulting in huge productivity loss for those commuting on this stretch, estimated at billions of US $, every year.

Our government is spending Rs. 450 crores for redevelopment, which is welcome.

Now, under this redevelopment plan, we have an opportunity to make our traffic congestion – a thing of past and also improve air quality to safe limits.

Namma ORR – my Vision after Redevelopment and starting of metro services -Blue line (Phase 2A).

Namma ORR satisfies all road users –

  • Pedestrians including persons with disabilities
  • Poorest of poor who can’t afford even a bus fare.
  • Senior citizens, Children.
  • Senior citizens, Children.
  • People, who hop on to a scooter/ motor cycle or autorickshaw, for short distance, in the absence of walkable footpaths.
  • Bicycle Riders.
  • Bus passengers for both on ORR and last mile connectivity.
  • Metro passengers.
  • Road users without any traffic congestion, (can complete their trip within reasonable time).
  • No loss of productivity due to congestion.
  • Pollution free road for all.
  •

Now, suggested action plan for redevelopment of ORR:
 Footpath

Footpath is already included in the plan. Let us construct the footpath, strictly as per IRC (Indian Road Congress) – IRC 103:2012(Second Revision), Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities.

Bicycle Track

Bicycle Track is already included in the plan. Let us construct the bicycle tack as per the IRC guidelines - IRC 11:1962, and separate it physically from carriageway.

Bus priority Lane (BPL)

BPL is also included as ‘dedicated bus lane’. Let us build it scientifically and locate it, in the middle of road, next to median, so that, it is not disturbed from other road traffic coming in or exiting main road. Let, BPL be physically separated from main carriageway.

Road and metro station junctions

Integration of important road junctions is already included. Let us integrate metro stations also.

Vending/commercial

Let us not provide facilities for any commercial activities on ORR, including spaces under metro/flyover. Commercial activities can be restricted to side roads.

Green cover

Wherever space is available, let us plant trees. Even if there is place for a single tree. Let us plant one and maintain it. Other open spaces can be suitably landscaped through experts. Let us green the space below metro line and flyovers with vertical gardens (similar to KIA airport) through CSR programme.

Buses on BPL (Bus Priority Lane)

Let us ply Buses on BPL at a frequency of less than five minutes at peak hour. Entire fleet of buses on this route, can be gradually changed to electric vehicles.

Buses on important side roads integrated with ORR

Let us ply feeder buses from all major intersections and metro stations at suitable frequencies for last mile connectivity. We can gradually change the feeder buses to electric.

Free Bus travel for all.

Already ladies are availing free bus travel in our city. Let us extend this free bus travel to all, on all buses plying on ORR and feeder services at important junctions. The free bus service will encourage more commuters to opt for bus travel and reduce congestion. The cost of the free bus travel is easily compensated from huge environment cost that we are already paying due to pollution (caused) by large number of auto mobiles. The congestion free road will also result in saving billions of US $ in productivity loss(economic benefit).

The free bus travel facility on ORR can be extended to other sections of ORR, initially and entire city, thereafter, if found, successful.

Main carriageway – Asphalt instead of concrete (White topping)

Let us Build the main carriageway with asphalt (Hot mix) instead of concrete. Hot mix asphalt road, is much cheaper and eco-friendly too. The asphalted road allows percolation of rainwater thereby avoiding flooding, besides many other advantages. Asphalted roads can be built in a shorter time compared to white topping.

Roadside drain.

Let us build a good drainage system, keeping in mind effective percolation of rainwater to ground so that it charges ground water table instead of flooding.
