Our community has been blessed with two individuals, Bruce Fleming and George Fratus, whose impact goes far beyond the realm of tennis coaching. This petition begins with a deeply personal story. George Fratus, one of the mentioned mentors, was my grandfather. His passing in February 2024 marked the end of an era of dedication and passion for tennis. I, along with many others, had the honor of being coached by him and Bruce Fleming, an experience that still ranks as one of the best times of our lives. Their selfless commitment to improving our abilities and their efforts to create an inclusive program have left an enduring impression on us all.

However, their contributions extend far beyond the court. Bruce Fleming boasts an extraordinary record as head coach, achieving over 400 victories, securing 19 CIC titles, 6 sectional championships, 1 regional title, and earning the distinction of District Coach of the Year five times. He was also named Indiana Girls Tennis Coach of the Year in 2014. Over his 18 seasons coaching boys’ tennis and 15 seasons coaching girls’ tennis from 2003 to 2021, Bruce consistently exemplified excellence and dedication. While he is now retired and has relocated to Arizona, his influence continues to resonate with the countless lives he impacted. George Fratus served as his assistant coach from 2006 to 2018, though his role as a volunteer coach started well before that. Together, they shaped the Mississinewa tennis program into a state-recognized success, mentoring players who earned college scholarships and exemplifying the best of high school athletics.

Beyond their competitive achievements, Bruce and George also fostered a sense of community through their efforts. They initiated a public Tuesday night tennis league, promoting health, inclusiveness, and camaraderie within the broader community. Their influence reached far beyond their teams, impacting players, parents, and residents alike.

Despite their unparalleled contributions to both athletics and the community, the Mississinewa High School tennis courts remain unnamed. It is time we honor their legacy and enduring impact by naming the tennis courts after them: The "Fleming Fratus Courts." This gesture will preserve their memory, celebrate their accomplishments, and inspire future generations.
