The Issue

On October 18, 2021, my son, Ocean Washington, tragically lost his life to gun violence at Mission Manor Park. Ocean was a lively and vibrant young man who had a profound impact on everyone who knew him. His energy was contagious, and he always strived to make a positive difference in his community. Since his untimely passing, our family and community have been seeking ways to honor his memory and transform our grief into hope for others impacted by similar tragedies.

The new Mission Manor Aquatic Center is a project that promises to be a beacon of joy and connection for families in our community. Naming the center after Ocean would not only commemorate his legacy but also serve as a reminder of the positive changes we can initiate in the face of adversity. The aquatic center, with its promise of togetherness and fun, mirrors what Ocean stood for—love, community spirit, and resilience.

Honoring Ocean's legacy in this way would also highlight the urgent need to address gun violence and advocate for safer communities. By attaching his name to a place dedicated to recreation and wellness, we can keep his spirit alive and inspire change. This gesture would offer a space where families can create happy memories, just as Ocean would have wanted.

We urge local authorities to consider this meaningful tribute to Ocean Washington. Not only would it be a fitting way to remember a young life taken too soon, but it would also emphasize our commitment to fostering unity, education and safety in our community.

Please join in this heartfelt initiative by signing this petition. Your support can help honor Ocean's memory, educate the public on gun safety and make a powerful statement against gun violence.
