The Issue

New Jersey is building a nine-mile state park connecting Montclair to Jersey City through eight municipalities in Essex and Hudson counties — two of the most diverse, immigrant-rich, and politically engaged regions in America.

State officials are asking the public to help name it. The four proposed options are fine. But there is a better one.

No Kings.

In 2026, as the Trump administration has moved to concentrate power, silence opposition, deport families, and dismantle the checks and balances that protect ordinary Americans, "No Kings" has become a rallying cry for millions of people who believe that democracy belongs to everyone — not just those at the top. It has been chanted in the streets of Newark. It has been carried on signs outside detention centers in Jersey City. It is the spirit of the communities this park will serve.

A park named No Kings would be a permanent, public declaration that the land beneath it — and the people who walk it — belong to no one but themselves. It would be the first park in America named after this movement. It would open near the nation's 250th anniversary, when the meaning of American democracy is being debated more fiercely than at any point in a generation.

The DEP says this park is "for the people and the communities connected here in this very special way." No Kings is exactly that.

Voting closes June 29. We're calling on the New Jersey DEP and Acting Commissioner Ed Potosnak to add No Kings as a fifth naming option and let the people of New Jersey decide.
