The Issue

The true value of a community lies in its pillars, and for ours, no pillar was as strong, nor as deeply entrenched as my father, Ron Mitchell. He devoted over 30 years of his life to nurturing local youth sports, most notably 11-12 year old baseball . His dedication went beyond the field; he developed software for scheduling and dedicated countless hours to umpiring. It was a labor of love that he was immensely proud of, and his impact resonates in the enhanced status of local sports today.

In recognition of his unwavering efforts to our community, we call on Cornerstone Park managers and local authorities to name an 11-12 year old baseball field in honor of Ron Mitchell. This would memorialize the unsurpassable contributions he made and keep his legacy alive for generations to come. His name on the field would serve as a constant reminder of the tireless effort he put into the growth and progression of local youth sports.

Let's honor the man that held the torch for our community, stood by us in every high and low, and helped shape the lives of numerous youths through dedicated service and mentorship. Please sign the petition to support our effort to preserve and honor Ron Mitchell's contributions.

Responded
On behalf of the City of Starkville, I want to express my heartfelt condolences to the petition starter and their family. It’s clear that Ron Mitchell made a lasting and meaningful impact on our community, and I am grateful for his contributions and advocacy for youth sports. The request to name the Cornerstone Park baseball field in his honor is being heard with deep respect. However, I do want to share that the fields are maintained in part through sponsorship agreements, and those sponsorships come with naming rights. These partnerships provide critical funding that helps us maintain the very fields that meant so much to Mr. Mitchell and the young athletes he cared about. If we were to remove or alter those agreements, it could impact the revenue needed to keep these fields in good condition for the community. While there are challenges, I encourage continued conversations about alternative ways we can appropriately recognize his contributions. Mayor Spruill
