The Issue

On December 23, 2025, Officer Terry Bennett was struck by a vehicle while assisting a disabled motorist on I-695 in Washington, DC. On Wednesday, January 07. 2026, at only 32 years old, Officer Terry Bennett succumbed to the injuries he sustained. A tragic incident took the life of a beloved friend, fellow officer, son, husband, father, mentor, and coach in the DC community. His name resounds in the hearts of countless individuals who had the privilege of knowing him, and those who were touched by his dedication and compassion. It is therefore paramount that we honor his memory and his sacrifice in a lasting and impactful way.

Officer Terry Bennett served the Washington D.C. community not only as an officer but as a coach and mentor with unwavering commitment, protecting its residents and upholding justice. He was not just a peacekeeper, but a pillar of strength for his fellow officers. In both his public service and personal life, Officer Terry Bennett exemplified heroism, integrity, and selflessness. He left behind a profound legacy that should be immortalized and celebrated by the city he served faithfully.

We are calling on the Department of Transportation and DC city officials to designate a section of I-695 in Washington D.C. in Officer Terry Bennett's own name. By dedicating this highway, we will ensure that his name and sacrifice are not forgotten, but rather recognized and remembered by every traveler who passes through this section of the highway. It will stand as a testament to his courage and dedication, reminding us of the price of peace and the heroes who work to maintain it.

The naming of an I-695 section in Officer Terry Bennett's honor will also offer solace and respect to his grieving family, providing them with a public acknowledgment of their personal loss and the impact their loved one had on an entire community. This symbolic gesture will aid in the healing process and serve as a constant reminder of the positive influence Officer Terry Bennett had across the city.

We have precedents of highways being named after notable figures who have given so much to their communities. Let us follow in this tradition by giving this hero the recognition he rightly deserves.
