As a Senior at North Andover High School, my fellow classmates and I are very upset with the outcome of the survey results in regards to graduation. Students who voted in the survey for the June 5th and 6th dates were not informed that choosing these dates would result in graduating without being surrounded by our classmates, on our most anticipated day of our senior year. We believe there are other potential options to hold a graduation ceremony. However, we also understand that during these difficult times, it is unclear when we will be able to have group gatherings again. The outcome of the survey would have been different when choosing dates to accommodate options for being with our friends. It is vital to have friends and family there to be with us on such a special day.

From the news of having a potential prom in July, many students would prefer to have a graduation ceremony over a prom. We were able to have our Junior Prom, but a high school graduation is a once in a lifetime event. Waiting to see the outcome of COVID-19 in July or August could potentially allow us to be together for a prom, or more importantly, our graduation. If we are able to wait and see for our prom, I believe we should be able to do the same for our graduation. Even if this is in addition to the TV ceremony in June, another graduation where we can all be together would be more meaningful if the circumstances allow.

The most popular option from the survey was being with classmates (79%), and the most popular date was the June 5th weekend (49%). However, how many students answering 6/5 as the date knew that there would be no classmates together for graduation? Also, since only 70% of students responded to the survey, the 49% is only the choice of those who answered the survey, and not reliable due to the survey not accounting for the classmates preference. Finally, 49% (or really lower) is not even a majority preference date, the true majority is “not June 5th”. I suggest you narrow it down to two date choices, explicitly stating on the survey that June 5th is no classmates, and the second choice whether that be late July or early August may have classmates, depending on state guidelines and distancing outside.

If the date selected for prom is July 25th, and students said they are available, it should be possible to have graduation the day before the planned prom (July 24) or vice versa also having the option for a graduation July 31st or August 1st.

If by this point in time, the guidelines have not been lifted, we could refer back to the original plan that was sent out for June 5th and plan to have the procedure of that date take place on one of the dates listed above, July 24-25 or July 31-August 1. Sadly, our senior year has been cut short and out of our control, but we deserve to have a graduation ceremony with our friends and family to create memories that we will never forget. This will give us all something to look forward to, if the situation allows in this unprecedented time.
