Between 70-273 million sharks are killed each year. They are mainly killed for shark fins, which are seen as a delicacy, and used in so-called "shark fins soup".

The sharks, on the other hand, are thrown straight into the sea after their shark fin is cut off. It can take hours to days before the shark dies. 

Compared to this enormous number, sharks only kill around six humans each year, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File.

The chance of dying from flu is 1 in 63, and the chance dying from a shark is 1 in 3,700,000. There have been totally 828 shark attacks since 1580, which is reported from Florida Museum (2017).

You should therefore be more afraid of dying of a flue, than being killed by a shark. They may not been seen as sweet by everyone, but they are not dangerous.

There are around 470 species of sharks in the world. Around 1/4 of them is threatened with extinction according to The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and IUCN Shark Specialist Group (SSG). 

The majority of shark fins to Norway come from Asia were 70-80 percent of the fins are cut by illegal, according to Hjelp Havets Haier (HHH) (a Norwegian voluntary organization working for better management of sharks - both in Norway and internationally). This means Norway contribute to killing sharks that is threatened with extinction.

"Sharks help maintain the health of ocean ecosystems, including seagrass beds and coral reefs. Healthy oceans undoubtedly depend on sharks. By preventing one species from monopolizing a limited resource, predators increase the species diversity of the ecosystem", says Oceana.

This means all shark species should be protected, not only the species that is threatened with extinction. The ocean need the sharks. 

Demand that Norway make a law, or whatever is necessary, to make it illegal to import and sell shark fins, shark meat and products to Norway!

Du bør derfor være mer redd for å dø av en influensa, enn å bli drept av en hai. De blir kanskje ikke sett på som søte av alle, men de er ikke farlige.

"Haier er med på å opprettholde helsen til havøkosystemer, inkludert sjøgrasbed og korallrev. Sunne hav avhenger utvilsomt av haier. Ved å forhindre at en art monopoliserer en begrenset ressurs, øker rovdyrene artsmangfoldet i økosystemet", sier Oceana (oversatt til norsk av forfatter).

Dette betyr at alle haiearter skal beskyttes, ikke bare artene som er utrydningstruet. Havet trenger haiene.

Krev at Norge lager en lov, eller hva enn som er nødvendig, for å gjøre det ulovlig å importe og selge haifinner, haikjøtt og produkter!
