Glorifying animal racing should not be a part of mainstream TV channels.
Recently my family and I rescued a greyhound from the racing industry. Her name is Kelly. She came to us with poor coat condition, an eye condition that needed immediate treatment and terrible teeth from no previous dental care. Now, obviously I would like to see a ban on animal racing altogether but sadly I know that this will never happen in the immediate future. What I desire to see a change in however is the message that animal racing is 'something to support and be a part of.'
Every night when my TV is on I see greyhound racing in the form of gambling advertisements. These ads glamorise the act of betting on sports, something that I honestly didn't think twice about until I rescued Kelly. Now when I see them, I feel conflicted inside. How can I accept this advert on my TV in my own home? When I walk my greyhound, I still get people asking me: "Does she win you some solid money?" And those ads are exactly why. When I hear this, I want to block her ears and protect her. When I see the ads I want to cover her eyes. Society needs to move on - and some of us are.
Think of it like this. TV channels used to advertise that smoking was 'cool.'
