Liveability of the Ipswich region...who decides?
Join, Professor Hugh Possingham, Dr Christina Zdenek, Andrew Dinwoodie from BirdLife Australia and Keith McCosh, retired Environmental Officer in a lively debate on why nature needs our help.
This event on Sunday 14 February is hosted by Protect the Bush Alliance and supported by Save Woogaroo Forest Group. It will be held at the North Ipswich Reserve Corporate Centre, Room 1, 43 The Terrace, North Ipswich.
Hear more about why Ipswich City Council (ICC) should conserve 30% of forest in the Ipswich region, including Woogaroo Forest, to ensure liveability for current and future generations of people and wildlife.
Entry is $5 per person to cover room hire. Register here.
Our progress so far
We are now an incorporated, insured group of dedicated local volunteers—many of us are working parents and professionals. Together, we have:
✅ Hosted multiple events and distributed thousands of flyers
✅ Engaged with Ipswich City Council, State and Federal representatives and developers
✅ Written media releases, strategised, and built strong community awareness
✅ Collected more than 15,600+ petition signatures (and counting) to push for federal environmental protection of the forest
✅ Brought this issue into the spotlight as a major environmental vs. development debate.
We are fighting to update the outdated Springfield Structure Plan, which was does not align with today’s national habitat and wildlife protection laws.
Next steps – how you can help
🔹 Donate – We are all volunteers, and every dollar goes directly to the campaign. Funds help us print flyers, create signs, develop our website, and buy native trees for revegetation.
🔹 Volunteer – If you have time or skills to contribute, we’d love to have you on board!
🔹 Speak up – Use our example letters to contact key decision-makers. See below for examples.
Why now?
We believe we can stop this development. Stockland hasn’t purchased the land from Springfield City Group yet. The pressure is working—but we need to keep pushing.

Environmental Destruction Example
No housing developments in Woogaroo Forest. Woogaroo Forest is one of only a few patches of forest in Ipswich that supports biodiversity, hosting over 130 native bird species, over 80 native mammals, reptiles, and pollinators and over 400 native plant species including endangered koalas, powerful owl, frilled neck lizard, platypus and the grey headed flying fox. Housing developments would destroy vital habitats, reducing Ipswich's already low levels of biodiversity. The forest's trees play a critical role in cooling Springfield and Ipswich region, improving air quality, and acting as a major carbon sink. Destroying this natural ecosystem for development is environmentally irresponsible, unsustainable and will directly and seriously negatively impact liveability for not only wildlife but humans too.
Impact on Wildlife Example
I stand against housing developments in Woogaroo Forest. Woogaroo Forest is home to a plethora of native wildlife species with over 80 native mammals, reptiles, and pollinators and over 400 native plant species, including endangered koalas, powerful owls, frilled neck lizards, platypus’ and the grey headed flying fox that depend on its natural habitats. Housing developments would fragment these habitats, drive away native species, and irreversibly alter the forest's ecology. Wildlife corridors are crucial for species survival in urban environments, and Woogaroo Forest serves as a vital link.
Contribution to Urban Heat Example
Replacing forests with concrete and asphalt exacerbates the urban heat island effect in our city. Woogaroo Forest naturally cools the suburb of Springfield, mitigating heatwaves and reducing energy consumption. Removing mature forest, with all its complex biodiversity, to cover it in concrete would increase heat retention, making Springfield even hotter and less liveable. Leave our forest alone!
