Chevy Chase DC has a street named for a man named Francis Newlands, a senator from Nevada and bitter racist and anti-semite. Newlands advocated for the repeal of the 15th amendment, which gave Black men the right to vote, wanted to require Black people to work in exclusively menial jobs, ensured that all the neighborhoods he created were segregated, and had an end goal of complete removal of Black and Jewish people from the United States. 

Francis Newlands is not representative of our community in Chevy Chase, and having a street named for him is the continued glorification of horrible bigots in our great city. We must rename Newlands street and send a message that DC and Chevy Chase is no place for hate.
