Mt. SAC Refund Spring Parking Fee
The Issue
Dear Mt. SAC students and families,
Due to the current coronavirus outbreak, Mt. SAC has suspended all in-person and on-campus instructions since mid-March. The classrooms are empty, and the parking lots are no longer in use as the students no longer go on campus.
As you may know, Mt. SAC students who would like to have the convenience to park on campus have to submit parking fee of 50 dollars for every fall/spring semester. As we’ve only spent about 3 weeks on-campus (the first 2 weeks of parking are normally considered free), we consider it appropriate for Mt. SAC to offer students the opportunity to receive a full refund of the parking fee they’ve paid or to choose to extend the parking permit to the next full semester (Fall 2020).
We understand that many may overlook the importance of 50 dollars to a student or a household, but a large percentage of Mt. SAC students receive financial aid and/or public assistance. 50 dollars could mean to an entire week’s grocery expenses or multiple textbooks required by their academic courses. This is a extremely difficult time for many students and their families because their paychecks have been cut down or even suspended due to the virus. In addition, multiple public institutions of Southern California have made the step forward to refund the parking fees. Cal State LA has provided students links to submit their refund requests, and Cal State Dominguez Hills students have also successfully demanded their refunds.
As a Mt. SAC student, I would love to see everyone live to their bests while advancing in academics. And I hope that you could support this petition to bring students like us (especially those in need) a refund of our parking permit!
