Stop poverty wages for Miami janitors! End the threats & intimidation over organizing!

The Issue

Miami’s commercial real estate industry is booming, but many of the hardworking janitors who keep the buildings safe and clean earn poverty wages and work two or three jobs to survive.

Miriam is a grandmother of four who earns $8.46 an hour, cleaning offices at Miami’s Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC). She’s employed by Coastal Building Maintenance (CBM), the CIC’s cleaning contractor who pays its hard-working : cleaning staff as little as they can legally get away with—as low as Florida’s minimum wage. They don't receive meaningful benefits, sick days or vacation.

Like many others, Miriam works three jobs to make ends meet, sleeps only three hours a night, and often misses her grandchildren’s birthdays. As she and her coworkers have begun to organize, CBM has responded with threats and intimidation.

Janitors like Miriam are the unseen women and men whose work is at the heart of our cities. Without them our office spaces could not function. Now they are coming together across South Florida, as part of the Justice for Janitors campaign to fight for a thriving economy, where everyone shares in the prosperity they help create.

Sign this petition to let abusive cleaning contractors like CBM know that they must immediately stop the threats and intimidation and support their janitors’ right to organize!
