MSU Spartan Strong Start: Child Care Access for Student-Parents

MSU Spartan Strong Start: Child Care Access for Student-Parents
The Issue
We are a campaign group of Master’s in Social Work Students at Michigan State University who are passionate about advocating for student-parents needs and overcoming barriers to accessing education. Student-Parents at Michigan State University desperately need our help, for nearly 1 in 5 students in the US are balancing parenting responsibilities, gaining a higher education and working full-time. At Michigan State University, student-parents struggle with significant challenges in accessing affordable, licensed child care. Unfortunately the institution fails to collect data specifically regarding student-parents, which has the ability to address the gap in resources and identify parents' needs. In order to address this issue, Spartan Strong Start is actively advocating for funding within the MSU budget to be put towards childcare for low-income student parents, the expansion of the Spartan Child Development Center to serve more student-parents and the creation of a database to collect and analyze student-parent needs and barriers. By MSU investing resources and funding for student-parents, it can help reduce drop-out rates and increase graduation rates which will ultimately benefit the university’s long term success and reputation. Childcare is not a luxury but a necessity for equal access to education. Join us in demanding change for a more inclusive and supportive MSU where all Spartans are able to be successful.
