When you examine the criteria that universities need to meet in order to secure accreditation, you expect to find a check-list relating to the quality of the institution's academic programming. As it happens, accreditation also requires that universities demonstrate some more fundamental things as well--like a safe living and study environment. The Larry Nassar scandal (and my own experience at MSU) suggests that MSU does not succeed at guaranteeing students' fundamental right to campus safety. Indeed, MSU currently fails on ALL of the Higher Learning Commission's criteria relating to campus safety. For this reason, I ask you to sign and share my Move-On petition that calls on the HLC to suspend MSU's accredited status--until the university makes amends for ALL OF THE PAST INSTANCES OF ABUSE of which it is aware, and articulates a MEANINGFUL PLAN FOR ENSURING STUDENT SAFETY ON CAMPUS.
