On this election day, let's get out and VOTE, and remember that we're lucky to do so. The entire bizarre train wreck that I experienced at #MSU came about because an elected student government demanded change in the services in MSU's Owen Graduate Center. Stressed students wanted trained counselors--and MSU was putting up "little train that could" bulletin boards. Students worried about sexual assaults in the building, and MSU staff gave us Mary Kay and Nu-Skin purchasing opportunities. A variety of students--some of them conservatives, some of them Christians, some of them followers of Islam complained that it was inappropriate for a Dorm Director to be actively pursuing the students who lived in her building for sexual relationships. Everyone was of a consenting age--but many felt that the power dynamic was inappropriate. (MSU had no policy about staff sleeping with students in 1992--and as it happened, a former dorm director in the same building had been fired for also trolling the students under his care for sex). So those students on the OGA board took a vote--and unanimously demanded change from MSU's administration. CHANGE AT MSU NEVER HAPPENS UNLESS PEOPLE FORCE IT TO HAPPEN. The Owen Graduate Association tried to force change at MSU in 1992--and IT FAILED. In part because VP Moses Turner overthrew a student government and stole its operating funds...in part because he charged the OGA board members who complained about his negation of democratic process with racism in the MSU judiciary that he oversaw, and ultimately because he threatened to out students as gay when they went to the media. Use your power of the vote. And if anyone tries to take that from you, don't fall silent. Please continue to share my petition, and please encourage your connections to sign and share.
